The Ethnobotany Learning Center provides resources both for the study of the use of plants by indigenous Californians and for the study of California's indigenous flora. The Tongva are the indigenous people of the Los Angeles Basin. This gardens serves to show the importance of the plants and nature to certain ethnic groups. Before European colonization and destruction, plants were used for housing, tools, food, clothing, medicine and ceremonial rituals. This garden is important because it is preserving not only culture but habitat as well.
